Thank God for Sadness
Why this years NBA is one of the most valueable Championships ever

Year by year a King got crowned at the end of the NBA season as well as of any other in the Sports World. A routine that may cause a certain lack of euphoria for sure. This year that routine is broken by magic.

A magic that smells like Team Spirit, the enemy of flat bottom line calculations. Having much money, having some structure, create a rush by expensive hype and blow the rest. The Mavs aren´t a cheap team, of course not. Their leaders get paid very well. But it wasn´t a natural place to go to for those who understand themselves as champions of the game and world. The little team never ever won a NBA championship before, they reached the finals just once and lost it against the Miami Heat five years ago.

Founded 1979 there had been 14 years without even participating the Playoffs, ten times in a row since 1990/1991. In 1998, shortly before the end of this epic low, Dirk Nowitzki from Würzburg/Germany arrived. And on June, 12th 2011 he wrote history with his only team since then - the Dallas Mavericks. Leading them as their captain statistically he just played the standards he had developed with continuity over the years - but which now were considered outstanding performances worldwide. Because now its been carried through the biggest games - and it did bring the title. While phrasing their respect the most of US media didn´t really spot on it with such euphoria. They had prepared their celebration in a different way, clearly centering the Superstar ensemble of the Heat in advance. The usual post game discussion on ESPN took all its time talking about Miami´s future. Set case you want a reason for that, the media had lost the finals. Dallas and especially Nowitzki hardly took a part in (u)their(/u) game.

That´s much of what gives a romantic charm to this victory. It wasn´t just another bought "success", it was true success. The old familiar sting, like their foxy coach Rick Carlisle (who had won the NBA as a reserve player in the 80ies) put it. They were a team, they were grown individuals. They were not just super talented collegs dized into a room paved with gold. There only chance was to trust each other and to forgive each other. When Dirk Nowitzki, in the big final game of his life, had a phenomenally bad first half with only making one of 12 field attempts, the team wasn´t falling into the shadows of a doubt. Which means a lot by Nowitzki having been their leader the most Playoff games before, taking over responsibility in the darkest situations. Through the entire final series he was showing incredible effort by even playing up strong against the limits of illness and injuries. But the team was not shocked by his then surprising failure in the 6th game. His plain blackout could not confuse the rest of the gang. Not even in such a match which can boost nervousity into fatal paralysis. Driven by the Seattle born Jason Terry, besides Nowitzki one of the two who could remember the 2006 final loss against the Miami Heat well enough, and the before much critized JJ Barea, who paid back all the trust the team and especially Rick Carlisle gave to him, they fought it together. Providing Dirk the time he needed to wake up - straight into the magic of the final moments. Where he was able to complete the validation of his "Finals MVP"-Trophy.

Now all those guys can call themselves champions of a true champion team. Center Tyson Chandler, who was the Mavs most indispensable entrant for this season. The 30+ guys like Stojacovic, Marion or the injured Butler and Haywood. Cardinal. They all were part of the same Team Spirit, as the younger bank players like Mahinmi, Beaubois or Brewer were. Or their positive maniac, club owner Mark Cuban. All won their first NBA championship together, everyone had found and taken on his role and contribution. So had Jason Kidd, 38 years old and one of the most impressive NBA players ever. But he never won the thing before, having lost both his Playoff Final-Series with the NJ Jets (2002 and 2003). Kidd once had started his career in Dallas as a 21 years old and returned there 14 years later, widely recognized as one of the best Point Guards in NBA-History. Being the oldest player ever having taken part in a NBA final game, he maybe knows the heart and bones of that glory the most: you´ll have to understand the ball running. And you gotta love and trust it.

Other teams had much more of the usual media attributes. They were younger, they were more athletic. They were funkier, sexyer and they had more good selling "bad guy"-charms. Their contracts and perspectives might be greater. But by all of that they haven´t been sad and mentally strong enough to win against the castaway guys from the Dallas Mavericks.

And that´s nothing but lifes wonderful irony.

"Their contracts and perspectives might be greater"
